Based in South Africa, Basadi Women of Jazz is one of the popular groups that have laid a solid foundation to African music in the world. This group of five women has extended the realm of music from the male domain to the female, composing music and playing instruments.

Basadi Women of Jazz is among the popular music groups based in the city of Johannesburg. The group composes music in varied African styles. The group of five women has performed in big concerts and occasions with musical giants such as Letta & Caiphus Semenya, Judith Sephuma, Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba and the late Brenda Fassie. The group follows varied styles of music such as the Phata-Phata, Blues and Rock, collated and developed in the form of Jazz.

More on Basadi Women of Jazz....

The debut album of Basadi Women of Jazz, Journey Ain't Through, was released in 2003. The album was independently recorded by the group. There has been no looking back for the group since its debut. The band has had the privilege of performing before the President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela. It has also performed on the occasion of South Africa's 10th anniversary freedom celebrations in Slovakia, Vienna, Rwanda, Stockholm, Poland and Slovenia.

 

 

MEET THE BAND:

Mabatho Masopha - Born in Soweto, she is the founding member and leader of the band. She derives her inspiration in Jazz music from her father, who played the saxophone and drums.

Bonnie Stark - She is the drummer and back vocalist in the band. She joined the Basadi Women of Jazz while studying in Pretoria.

Sibongile Gwacela - Born in Durban, Sibongile Gwacela plays the bass guitar for the band. She also provides the back vocals for Basadi Women of Jazz.

Phuti Sepuru is presently, one of the prominent members of the band, playing the piano and providing back vocals.

Dineo Masopha - She is the elder sister of Mabatho and the percussionist and vocalist in the band.
